The Masters: A recap

Finally! Sergio Garcia Major Winner

Not once during the entire round that I thought Sergio was going to pull it out. From the Justin Rose birdie onslaught on the front to get to -8 to the Serg duff on 10 and the Serg unplayable at 13, I think everyone can agree: we were seeing another Sergio meltdown. Well not this time. Not today.

For once Sergio didn’t blow himself up, even when it looked that way. From the par save on 13 onward Sergio played lights out. He stuffed his drives and approaches on 14, 15, 17, and finally 18. Missing that putt to win was tough but all the momentum was on his side. Once Rose hit his drive right it was over, Sergio draining the putt just put an exclamation point on it.

What does this mean for Sergio? Do the floodgates open? He is only 37 after all and has about 8 years left of competitive golf. I say he gets 1 maybe 2 more, and would bet that they would be Open Championships.

Justin Rose has to be a lock for a top 5 at the Open this year, guy is playing lights out golf and is always competitive. He is a lock for my Open Championship squad and I’m mad at myself for picking Hatton over him this year.

Young Studs

How about Pieters, Rahm, Koepka? This is a really great time for young golfers and the conversations around who is going to be the best one is going to be fun. It is easy to pick Rahm after his amateur and early win this year. It is also easy to pick Pieters after his T4 at the masters. Why is no one talking about Koepka? The guy had a good weekend going 71,69 to finish T11. I still think Pieters is going to be the best of the three but people need to be talking about Koepka.

The whitest guy on tour aced the par 3 16th and somehow ended up with another Master’s top 5. He’s the king of the back-door top 5, three of which have come at the Masters.

Disappointment for Rick and Jordie

What happened to these guys on Sunday? Rickie was -5 before blowing up on the back nine, ending up with a 76. and Spieth(75) never really had it going. The first hole was a perfect analogy for how the day would go. Bunker escape to a par save and a bogey for the pairing set the tone for the round. I’m sure Rickie and Jordan were disappointed with their play as it could have been a career defining win for Rickie and Jordan.

CBS Lacking in the Coverage Department

I’m not sure what is going on with the Master’s coverage, but it has to be better. I barely saw any of Pieters, Matsuyama, Rickie, Spieth, Rory, etc. The only thing that saved the broadcast was the Sergio meltdown followed by his resurrection. They need to show more bombed tee shots. I get you want to show approach shots but maybe instead of showing a 3 foot gimme putt show a 250 yard 3 wood approach, or show a 350 yard drive (Pieters I believe went 350 and so did Rory). There are so many young studs in the game that they just aren’t showing. They showed a hole getting repaired instead of two (at the time) top 10 contenders tee-ing off. CBS needs to be better next year, because they owe it to the fans.

Other notes

Rory never really had it going  but he’s got 10 more cracks at the career grand-slam. I’m sure he gets one

Paul Casey is underrated. He never gets mentioned as a top 15 player in the world but that may be because he doesn’t play enough.

Ryan Moore has a ton of talent and is close to putting it all together.

Adam Scott can hit the shit out of the ball

Lee Westwood is great at Augusta

Emiliano Grillo did not have a good tournament

Danny Willett STINKS!

Sergio Garcia finally won a Major
