*UPDATE* 2018 2nd and 2017 3rd. Rangers have an extra 2018 2nd from Ottawa so not the worst thing in the world. Would have preferred a different defenseman but let’s see what happens this season and the offseason
Good deal for Detroit as they continue their rebuild and should continue selling assets. They couldn’t get an extension done so Smith is packing his bags. Look for the Rangers to possible resign him. Shattenkirk is their #1 goal after the expansion draft but I think they will try and re-sign Smith for somewhat cheap. Not sure on the timing on everything, if they want to extend him during the season or wait till the end of the year.
Puzzling for the Rangers with the cost, but makes sense since Girardi is out now for 10 days to 2 weeks and their back-end has been an issue all year.
Smith played with McD at Wisconsin so it could be a natural pairing. Initially I thought it was a massive over-payment but looking at the marketplace I can understand the valuation.
Smith should be good for 20 minutes a night. I would like to see him step right into Girardi’s spot with McD. This would allow Staal/Holden to stay together and Skjei and Clendening to stay together.
If they make another move to ship Klein out the door I wouldn’t mind it.Once Girardi comes back we will be holding one extra defenseman on the NHL roster, someone is going to be sent down.
This seems like an over-payment but Gorton knows what he’s doing. Almost seems like the Rangers did a deal to do a deal.
TL:DR Decent deal to shore up the blue line depth wise especially considering the injuries to Girardi and Klein. Detroit get’s picks to replenish a struggling prospect system after making the playoffs for 25 years.
